Weekend Wrap-Up

This was the first weekend in October so we spent Saturday getting ready for Halloween. Anna and Marisa helped me decorate the yard.

We hung our glow-in-the-dark skeleton,

put out our crashed witch,

(she looks better in the dark, here she looks a little weird)

and got out our light-up skeleton.

Obviously, this guy looks way better in the dark because a) he lights up and b) you don't see all cords!!

Once the house was decorated we headed to get some lunch with Katie and Jeannie and then to pick out pumpkins to carve. Katie had never carved a pumpkin before so it added to the fun! Anna picked out a BIG orange one, Marisa picked a small white pumpkin and Katie found a really cool blue one! Jeannie let us carve on her deck (and let us make a huge mess doing so).

Martin does not like carving pumpkins at all but we did get him to help us out and cut the tops off.

Look how nervous Anna is that he's going to mess up her perfect pumpkin! Martin then retired to the couch to watch tv while we got to work.

Pumpkin carving is no easy task. Anna learned that her picking a big pumpkin meant much more gooey stuff to have to empty out!

She dug and dug (and got some help from Jeannie) and finally got it clean.

Once the pumpkins were clean, it was time to pick the stencil. Anna and Marisa picked pretty quickly. Anna chose a skull and Marisa chose a "Jakers" (she thought it looked like Jake). Katie had a tougher time deciding but finally put together something she liked.

It was then time to poke the holes around the outline of the design so they would know where to cut.

Check out that concentration!

I think this was about the time Katie started to wonder if this was more work than fun... but they all kept working.......

And look at my 28 year-old sister's very first carved pumpkin. It turned out great!

The girls were excited to see them lit up so we strapped in the girls and their pumpkins and headed home.

The final results were fantastic!

Not bad, huh?

Sunday the girls went to Jeannie's to clean up the pumpkin mess they had made and to put in some more hours earning the wii.

Tavi came over Sunday night and we had dinner and talked some more about college. We had a nice night with her and then had to head to bed since we had to be up at 5 a.m. Yuck.

We had a great weekend with family and friends. Hope everyone else did too!

well as a totally unbiased party, I thought the pumpkins were wonderful!!! and I really appreciated the next day's clean up process. Tell Anna to watch out for dog poop!
